Hi Kim :)

Sorry it took me so long to reply. My blog was hacked, and this is the first time I've been able to get into it for months :(

I always love it when my cute hubby can take off and adventure with me, but--unfortunately--he works far too hard to travel with me most of the time. He's a software engineer ... so makes me a "software widow" ... an industry term which means I get left home alone a lot ... since his employers routinely think nothing of assigning him a whole lot more than 40 hours/week of work, especially at "crunch time." It gets so bad sometimes--not just with him, but with all of them--that there's an old joke in the CS biz that all computer engineers need a mistresses as well as a wife. That way ... when their wife thinks they're with their mistress ... and their mistress thinks they're with their wife ... they have time for their bosses ... and their computers ...*chuckles*

Don't worry: he doesn't have a mistress! He's a wonderful man, and I accepted his career (and the hours that come with it) back when we first met 14 years ago. I also accept that he has 19 ladies in his life: me ... and--between his office and what he has running at home--no less than 18 various computers that demand his time. It doesn't mean I don't grump about it on occasion. I'm only human, and I do miss him when he works extra long. At the same time, though, I understand that this is his career ... and that's what it takes to succeed in it. In turn, he supports my artistic pursuits and travels ... and encourages me to adventure and be his "ambassador" to the world, and to our distant friends and family. Non-traditional, yes ... but it works for us! :)

Besides, when I'm gone for a long stretch of time, I leave him with more than enough canned "meals in a jar" that he doesn't have to cook for himself, he has the dogs to keep him company, we talk on the phone several times/day (whether I'm home or not), and--bonus points--he doesn't have to feel guilty about coming home after working on computers all day ... and then playing with his other computers at home all evening, ignoring me.

In other words, he misses me when I'm gone, just like I miss him ... but it also feels like a vacation for HIM at the same time :)

You are such an interesting person. i really enjoyed your list. Not to be more personal, but what does your husband do while you are away on your trips? You don't mention if he goes or you just go alone. Just curious. Such a great list - love the scooter!

hi Liz :)

i saw the Seattle Tilth stuff, too...back when i first started looking for a MFP program ... but when i read over what they said about it on the web (it's been a while now) ... i got the impression that--even after paying the $375 fee--you still couldn't officially call yourself a "MFP" ... just like with the state program when you didn't live in the right county... you could come and pay your $375...but then--once you were finished--you could only say "i've taken the Master Food Preservers class"...you couldn't actually call yourself a "MFP"....so i scrapped that idea .... since they were selling the same thing the state was ... when--either way--you couldn't get the actual certification...

granted, i may have mis-read it back then...and it's no longer on their website for me to check to be sure....but that sure soured me on their whole program...

someone will eventually have problems with home-canned food here again...and--i response--hopefully King County will decide it's a big enough problem that they need to teach classes again locally...and get a few more MFP's on the phone to help others...so you and i will have our chance to take the class! :)

So, I'm glad I found this post as I too live in King County and was looking into getting my Master Preserver cert. What a bunch of crap that you have to live in the county it's being offered in! You know Seattle Tilth offers a class too in May, but I was deterred by the $375 cost, I guess it's not so bad now. Their class also certifies you to teach canning for 3 years I believe. I had big hopes of getting certified and being able to teach some classes at the farm I'm working at and to branch out to get my kitchen certified for home production, thanks to the new cottage food laws in WA state. Boo!

We haven't tried the Freshroast brand ourselves, but that's not much of a recommendation if 6 months was all you got out of it. The iRoasts only lasted about 12 months ... which we felt that was kinda chinzy for a machine we paid like $180 for. I know that electronics that *heat* have a higher chance of burning out with constant use ... but you'd think they'd spend a little more design energy toward making them last a little longer. I guess we're witnessing 'planned obsolescence' at work once again. They know if they get us hooked on their product--and (when it comes to home coffee roasting they have--we'll just buy another one when this one dies :(

i just love my nesco... i also hate the burnt coffee that starbucks serves..
i much prefer medium roasts and the nesco delivers well in that respect...
yes, this roaster is a bit slow, but you're not roasting a 20 lb turkey here.. just chill and wait the 20-25 minutes...
i had a freshroast before and it roasted too quickly to get a perfect shade of brown.. with this roaster, you can slowly see the beans turning color and stop it when you think they are done...
its a snap to clean and looks like it like it will last a while.. my freshroast machine was much hotter and something burnt out after about 6 months of use....
