Dad and I decided to go have lunch with our friend Susan today. She’s a wonderful lady and friend–who also just happens to be married to Dad’s cardiologist, too–so I was delighted at the chance to see her, and to get the extra confirmation that he’s doing just fine these days.
We picked her up at her office at noon, and decided to eat at a place nearby that I’d heard a lot about over the years: The Silo!
If you need the address, it’s:
The Silo
625 Rockland Road (Rte. 176)
Lake Bluff, IL 60044
847-234-7456
They offer a wide variety of foods on their menu–from Gourmet Stuffed Potatoes (showcasing everything from crab to BBQ as toppings) to salads to baked pasta entrees to sandwiches (including their famous Foldovers) to full dinners including ribs and chicken–but The Silo is best known for their pizza! In fact, they’ve been voted Best Pan Pizza on the North Shore by the Chicago Tribune and won numerous other local food awards as well.
When we arrived, The Silo was hopping with a busy lunch crowd, but it only took us a couple of seconds to be seated. It was enough time, however, for me to scan the daily specials … and to instantly find what I wanted to eat
They call it their Adult Macaroni and Cheese, and doesn’t it look lovely?
The Adult Macaroni and Cheese starts with large twists of perfectly-cooked pasta, caramelized onions, and a sauce made from four different cheeses, all topped with buttered breadcrumbs. To it, you can add bacon (like I did), chicken, steak, steamed broccoli, or a combination of those items … to create the prefect mac & cheese experience.
Susan opted for one of The Silo’s personal Supreme pizzas, which looked and smelled marvelous from the moment it arrived.
And–last but not least–Dad decided to have one of his favorite meals at The Silo: a BBQ Chicken Foldover, topped with Romaine lettuce and Cesar dressing!

Honestly, I don’t think there was a single bad bite of food on our entire table. There was also so much of it that each of us took home at least half of our individual meals … and, after they deducted the $4 coupon Susan brought with her, our check only totaled $27.60. In other words, you also can’t beat the value!
Dad and Susan both enjoyed their choices, and I just wanted to shove every bit of that wonderful homemade mac & cheese into my waiting mouth … even though I knew I’d better not even try. It was tasty, yes–but also very filling–so I ate conservatively … but lavishly nonetheless
Final score: I really enjoyed my meal, and so did my companions. The fact that my entree was so flexible–and their menu was so extensive–definitely gave them bonus points in my book. Overall, I’ll give The Silo a solid A! In fact, I think I may have to add it to the rotation for the next time I visit! It was that good!
